Racoons of Ohio

Raccoons are a very common sight in backyards and neighborhoods in Ohio. They are critters that have a reputation for being great climbers. However, these little guys can wreak havoc on your property as they search for food sources & shelter to satisfy their needs. These critters have adapted well to urban areas and are often found rummaging through trash cans and dumpsters. Raccoons will also get into your attic, chimney, or crawl in any space by squeezing through small openings where they will build their den and have their babies.

More than 100 raccoon bites to humans are reported in Ohio each year.  Raccoons are the animal reservoir for raccoon rabies variant.  Raccoon rabies variant is present in Ohio, particularly in the northeastern part of the state.  People or their pets can become exposed to rabies when they are bitten by a raccoon.

Raccoons usually leave signs of their presence behind after they have moved into your attic. These include:

• Stains and rub marks on surfaces where they climb around

• Scratching sounds in the ceiling or walls of your house

• A strong musky odor that smells like ammonia

• Tipped over garbage cans

• Pets acting strangely

• Missing pet food
